Nur rund 800 der über 2000 Inkunabeln, die in den Niederlanden entstanden, sind datiert. Um eine bessere Datierung zu ermöglichen, wird seit längerer Zeit mit Hilfe von Abreibungen sowie mit radiographischen Methoden systematisch eine Wasserzeichen Datenbank der niederländischen Inkunabeln aufgebaut. Auf den in die Website der KB eingebetteten Webseiten informiert man über die Datenbank, Erfassungsmethoden, Sekundärliteratur etc. Zentral ist natürlich der Datenbankzugang über eine einfache, eine erweiterte Suche sowie ein Browsing über Darstellungshauptgruppen. Alongside type and other bibliographical evidence, paper research is a method of arriving at a dating within a range of years rather than decades. Identification of paper stocks has long been hindered by inadequate reproduction of the watermarks used in them. But ways of reproducing them other than by tracing were developed in the second half of the twentieth century, methods such as photography, beta radiography, Dylux, low-voltage Röntgen radiation (as in WM I 00152), rubbings (as in WM I 00259) and electron radiography. The two methods here used for the Low Countries incunables are rubbings and electron radiography. Making rubbings is cheap and quick and does not damage the books. [...] Of the 2000 editions - with the exception of some 30 books, mostly short - there have been made more than 18,000 rubbings of watermarks in one or more copies of each. The best images of watermarks are made by beta radiography and electron radiography.
