Die Holzschnitt- und Metallschnittdrucke aus der Sammlung der Bodleian Bibliothek stellen frühe europäische Drucksachen des 15. Jahrhunderts dar, die Worte und Bilder in aufwendigen, aber leicht reproduzierten Serien kombinieren, meist vorgesehen für die andächtige Nutzung oder die fromme Lehre. Die Technik des Holzschnitts wurde benutzt, um das älteste erhaltene Buch, ein chinesisch-buddhistischer Text aus dem 9. Jahrhundert, zu drucken. Die "Bodleian Blockbücher" enthalten Ausgaben der Apokalypse, der Biblia pauperum, des Canticum Canticorum (das Hohe Lied), und einen Text zum Unterrichten von Latein, nämlich Donatus' lateinische Grammatik. [Text: Redaktion b2i]The woodcut and metalcut prints from the collections of the Bodleian Library represent early European printing of the 15th century, combining words and images in elaborate but easily-reproduced series, mainly intended for devotional use or teaching. The technique of woodblock printing was used to print the oldest surviving book, a Chinese Buddhist text from the 9th century. The Bodleian blockbooks include editions of the Apocalypse, the Biblia Pauperum, Canticum Canticorum (the Song of Songs), and a text for teaching Latin, Donatus's Latin grammar. [Text: Redaktion b2i]
