Project Description

The subject portal has been developed for eight areas of Classical Studies: Egyptology, Ancient History, Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Byzantine Studies, Classical Archaeology, Classical Philology, Medieval and Neo-Latin Philology and Pre- and Early History. It meets the needs of the Internet user by providing quick and efficient literature searches, as well as direct access to high-quality scientific information.  A range of information from each subject area is available for both the specialist and the layman.  It is intended to link all of these services permitting a unified, simultaneous search in a variety of reference tools and databases.

• Subject literature: Bibliographic searching is assisted by the large number of linked online catalogues and subject specific databases.  It is possible to search for books, collected works and journals as well as individual articles, either in individual subject areas or on an interdisciplinary basis.  Recent publications can be found in the database of new acquisitions.  It is also possible to place orders for items.

• Electronic resources:  the subject information guides SISYPHOS and KIRKE contain Internet sources that have been checked for their academic quality and recorded according to librarianship standards.  The collections are regularly updated.  Electronic journals can be found in the Electronic Journals Library (EZB).  Access to a multitude of databases on every subject is possible via the Database Information System (DBIS).  The menu option “Digital Collections” offers free access to digitized literature from the 16th to the 20th Centuries.

• Publishing:  the publication platform „Propylaeum-DOK“ contains publications from all disciplines, including dissertations and articles.  In contrast to the document servers of the individual universities, the subject specialist can find here a centralised resource for freely available electronic publications.

• Scientific exchange:  this subject portal functions not only as an information system but also as a forum for scientific and research communication.  This includes a regularly updated calendar with news, as well as a subject forum with up-to-date notices, event tips and links to other calendars of events.
• The installation of several subject portals, which will offer multi-level access to research areas or epochs for Classical Studies research and training, has started.
