Landscapes of Conflict: Archaeological Perspectives from Prehistory to the Middle Ages
International Conference
Mainz, 26-28 November 2025
Conflict is a persistent feature of human existence. Accordingly, societies consciously create institutions and normative frameworks that are designed to avoid or regulate conflict. Demonstrations of power are also often used as a deterrent and therefore conflict-preventing strategy. However, if such measures fail, there is almost unlimited potential for escalation and violence. The international conference „Landscapes of Conflict: Archaeological Perspectives from Prehistory to the Middle Ages“, held at the LEIZA from 26 to 28 November 2025, explores the effects of de-escalating measures and violent conflicts on the interaction between humans and their environments over substantial periods of time.
