Sitzung der AG Römerzeit im Rahmen der WSVA, MOVA und NWVA Verbandstagung in Bonn

Siedlungen sind eine der zentralen Befundgattungen der Provinzialrömischen Archäologie. Der Oberbegriff „Siedlungen“ repräsentiert eine Vielzahl verschiedener Baustrukturen, die im archäologischen Befund dokumentiert werden können.

Die AG Römerzeit tagt vom 23.–24.09.2026 im Rahmen der WSVA, MOVA und NWVA Verbandstagung im Bonn / Denkmalpflege LVR-Museum Bonn und lädt dazu ein, Forschungsarbeiten, interdisziplinäre Fragestellungen und innovative methodische Ansätze und jüngst aufgedeckte und/oder aufgearbeitete Befunde zu diesem Thema zu präsentieren.

Vorträge (15 Min.) oder Poster können bis zum 3. Mai mit einem kurzen Abstract (ca. 500 Wörter) bei den Sprecher*innen der AG (roemerzeit_wsva@gmx.de) eingereicht werden. Diese Einladung richtet sich vor allem auch an unsere jungen Kolleg*innen, um ihnen die Möglichkeit zu bieten, ein Netzwerk über Institute und Ländergrenzen hinaus aufzubauen.

Burgen in Brandenburg und Pommern
Mittelalterliche Befestigungen im Spannungsfeld von Landesherrschaft, Adel und Stadt

Die Vielfalt der Bauherren macht die Burgenlandschaft in Brandenburg und Pommern ebenso interessant wie die Baugeschichte der Burgen mit ihren Wandlungen vom slawenzeitlichen Burgwall bis zur frühneuzeitlichen Festung. Von besonderer Bedeutung sind Fragen nach den verschiedenen Funktionen der Burgen, nach den mit ihnen verfolgten herrschaftlichen, wirtschaftlichen und militärischen Absichten sowie das Verhältnis von (adliger) Burg zur (bürgerlichen) Stadt. Dem soll diachron und vergleichend für beide Landschaften aus Perspektive unterschiedlicher Disziplinen (Archäologie, Geschichte, Bauforschung, Denkmalpflege) nachgegangen werden. Die Vorträge werden durch eine Exkursion zu Burgen der Uckermark ergänzt.

Die Tagung steht allen Interessierten offen. Die Vorträge werden simultan übersetzt (deutsch–polnisch). Um Anmeldung bis zum 26. Mai 2026 wird gebeten. Für Tagung und Exkursion werden keine Gebühren erhoben.

13th joint chapter meeting of CAA Netherlands/Flanders and CAA Germany

The upcoming Joint Chapter Meeting of CAA Netherlands - Flanders and CAA Germany invites scholars, practitioners, and students to submit presentations that explore and push forward digital and quantitative methods in archaeology and cultural‑heritage management.

In short, the Joint Chapter Meeting is meant to be a lively forum for sharing ideas, experiences and talking about everything digital in archaeology. Feel free to submit abstracts on projects that are planned, underway, or just finished—whether they’re research studies or theses. We’d especially love it if you could invite young scientists and researchers from related fields who collaborate with you to join us.

Abstract deadline is May 15, 2026 (23:59).

Abstracts should preferably be written in English, but German and Dutch are also accepted. In the spirit of international exchange and collaboration we’d love you to communicate in English whenever possible. If giving a talk in English feels intimidating, we kindly ask you to prepare your slides in English so that your audience has a fair chance to follow and understand your key points.

Friendship Diplomacy and Networking
Third Amici Populi Romani Workshop

Am 22.05.26 findet in Dresden der dritte Workshop zu den „amici populi Romani“ statt. Das Ziel ist die weitere Untersuchung der Freundschaftsverhältnisse zwischen Rom und seinen auswärtigen Nachbarn, insbesondere der persönlichen Nahverhältnisse zwischen römischen Aristokraten und den außeritalischen Eliten diesseits und jenseits der Reichsgrenze. In der zum Projekt dazugehörigen Datenbank "Prosopographie der auswärtigen Freunde Roms" (https://www.altaycoskun.com/apr) werden die Biographien der verschiedenen amici gesammelt und veröffentlicht. Die daraus resultierenden Fragestellungen werden nun schon zum dritten Mal in einem Workshop präsentiert und diskutiert. Der Fokus liegt dabei auf einem interdisziplinären Austausch, um dieses Phänomen antiker Diplomatie weiter zu erforschen. Beim Workshop können sowohl Beiträge zu neuen amici als auch übergeordnete Themen der römischen Diplomatie eingereicht werden. Vorträge können sowohl auf Deutsch als auch auf Englisch gehalten werden und sind zudem auch online möglich.

Spatiality and Networks in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages

From the North Sea to the Mediterranean, from the Atlantic to the Black Sea: The spatial distribution of late Roman and early medieval material culture demonstrates the era’s long-distance human connections.

New finds, as well as methodological and theoretical developments, allow us to analyse them from a new perspective.

The rise of the digital humanities has brought an immense range of possible network analyses, and the innovations of the science turn enable us to visualize connections between humans and animals, or between nature and material culture, on a large scale and with variable time scales. Theoretical Archaeology, in turn, offers perspectives on networks related to concepts of Actor Network Theory, entanglement, agency and enchainment.

It is hoped that the new possibilities and perspectives will help to deconstruct the limiting factors of spatial or geopolitical boundaries.

For this year’s AGSFM meeting we invite you to reflect on networks and perspectives of network analysis in late Roman and early medieval studies.

On September 21 and 22, 2026, this year’s meeting of the Working Group for Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages (AGSFM) will give space to these questions. The meeting will be a forum to present new results or projects on these topics. We also aim to identify and discuss related challenges, problems and questions.

We welcome contributions in German and English. Presentations should not exceed 20 minutes. Proposals for papers (400-600 characters) should be submitted to a.flueckiger@unibas.ch by April 30, 2026.

The Tools & Weapons Working Group will hold a thematic session as part of the joint annual meeting of WSVA and MOVA, taking place 21–25 September 2026 in Bonn (https://wsva.net/tagungen/). 

The working group session is scheduled for 22 September 2026 and will focus on the topic: Cutting and Thrusting Weapons/ Close-combat Weapons 

Contributions may address any chronological period or geographical region. By deliberately keeping the scope open, we aim to assemble a diverse and engaging programme that reflects the wide range of current research perspectives on the topic. We warmly welcome proposals for papers and posters. Presentations based on BA, MA, or PhD theses are explicitly encouraged. Please submit your proposal by 15 May 2026 in the form of a half-page abstract, including the author’s contact details (postal address and email address), to the speakers/coordinators of the Tools & Weapons Working Group:

Making Matters. Processes and Meaning of Crafting in Graeco-Roman Antiquity

In times of generative artificial intelligence, fundamental categories such as creativity, authorship, and technical skill are being renegotiated. These contemporary developments also invite renewed reflection on historical forms of making and on the cultural meanings, attitudes, or epistemic implications embedded in processes of production within the complex and multilayered material cultures of Greco-Roman Antiquity. Within the framework of an international conference from September 14-15, 2026, at the Department of Archaeology, Classical Philology and Ancient Studies at the University of Zurich in Switzerland, we are seeking to discuss a variety of perspectives on meaning and value, attitudes and negotiations of making, and crafting. In doing so, the conference aims to shift the focus from the finished product to the production process, exploring it not merely as the execution of a preconceived idea, but as a site of cultural and historical meaning-making in its own right.
To complement our already finalized program of invited senior scholars, we are delighted to
invite additional contributions from early career researchers (PhD candidates, PostDocs) from all fields of Ancient Studies (including, but not limited to, Classical Archaeology, Ancient History, Philology, Art History, Near Eastern Archaeology, Egyptology, etc.).

DGUF-Session "Praktika im Archäologiestudium" im Rahmen der WSVA-Tagung

Die DGUF beteiligt sich an der Jahrestagung des West- und Süddeutschen Verbandes für Altertumsforschung (Bonn, 21.-25. Sept.) mit einer halbtägigen Session (Di., 22 .9., nachmittags). Der DGUF-Arbeitskreis "Studentische Belange" (mehr) wird dort die Ergebnisse seiner derzeit noch laufenden Umfrage zu Praktika im Archäologiestudium vorstellen und damit als Einstieg ins Thema einen Überblick über studentische Erfahrungen geben. Unser CfP richtet sich an Studierende, die den allgemeinen Überblick durch fokussierte Erfahrungen oder Statements ergänzen wollen, sowie an Lehrende, an Praktika-Geber und Arbeitgeber, die aus ihrer Perspektive das Thema beleuchten wollen. Ziel ist es, gemeinsam eine Zwischenbilanz zu ziehen und Perspektiven zu entwickeln, um den Ist-Zustand weiter zu verbessern.

Vierte Nachwuchstagung der österreichischen Mediävistik
Wien, 19.–20. November 2026

Wer sich entschließt, zu promovieren, kann in der Regel Rat und Hilfe gut gebrauchen und profitiert besonders vom Kontakt zu anderen Forscher:innen, die sich auf ähnliche Epochen und Themen spezialisiert haben. Die Nachwuchstagung der österreichischen Mediävistik bietet ein Forum für diesen Austausch und das gegenseitige Kennenlernen. Die nunmehr vierte Nachwuchstagung findet am 19. und 20. November 2026 in Wien statt.

Die Veranstaltung richtet sich an Promovierende in den Disziplinen Geschichte, Germanistik, Hilfswissenschaften, Numismatik, Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeschichte, Archäologie, Kunstgeschichte, Byzantinistik oder Judaistik, die an einer österreichischen Universität oder zu einem Thema mit engem Bezug zum österreichischen Raum forschen und deren Dissertationsprojekte zeitlich auf das Mittelalter fokussiert sind.

Von allen Teilnehmenden wird die Bereitschaft erwartet, neben der Kurzvorstellung des eigenen Projektes einen kurzen Kommentar zu jeweils einem anderen Projekt vorzubereiten und eine Moderation zu übernehmen.

A Sense of the Absent: Perceiving Presence in Absence in Ancient Cultures
Dresden/Germany, 18^th – 19^th of March 2027

Submission Deadline: 31 May 2026

This conference will engage with the polarity of sensory presence and absence in the ancient world, not as a binary opposition but as a scalar phenomenon. Central points of enquiry will be the full, partial and non-presence of sensory impressions, affordances, and experience, as well as the specific forms, functions and discourses that manifest this spectrum.

Our aim is to create an interdisciplinary forum in classical and ancient world studies that brings together perspectives from diverse methodological and disciplinary backgrounds. The focus will be on historical phenomena of the ancient world, but contributions on Byzantine and medieval topics are also very welcome, as are contributions from other disciplines such as media studies, philosophy and cultural history, as long as they can demonstrate clear links to sensory perception and its gradation in an ancient world context.

We invite abstracts that engage with these or related questions and that develop a methodologically sophisticated perspective on the poles of presence and absence of sensory perception in the ancient world.

Please send your abstract as a Word and a pdf document, giving your name and the title of your paper in the form: name_title.doc/name_title.pdf. Abstracts of no more than 300 words in either English or German for a 30-minute presentation should be submitted by 31 May 2026 to anna_dorothea.uschner@tu-dresden.de. We welcome contributions from scholars of all career stages, including early career researchers, and plan to publish the proceedings of this conference.

This conference will be held in person. We shall provide free accommodation and a contribution towards travel expenses.
