Comedy and Commerce: Ancient Economies in the Light of Comic Texts from Classical Greece to Imperial Rome
International Conference 
Munich, 9–10 April 2026

Bringing together scholars from ancient history, classical philology, archaeology, and papyrology, the conference will explore how Greek and Roman comic texts—comedy and satire alike—shed light on economic practices, legal conditions, social hierarchies, and moral debates surrounding wealth, trade, and social mobility.

The conference brings together interdisciplinary research approaches within a longue durée perspective: the period under investigation ranges from Greek Classical antiquity (5th century BCE) to the Roman Imperial period (2nd century CE). Topics addressed include, among others, trade, monetization, the political dimension of abundance and scarcity, value and the commodity character of (immaterial) goods, the role of law, exchange and purchasability as metaphors, and the moral evaluation of wealth and social mobility. The search for “hard” economic facts is thus combined with the reconstruction of the socio-cultural embedding of economic activity in value discourses and literary representations.

Gemeinsame Jahrestagung 2026 des Arbeitskreis für Hausforschung (AHF) gemeinsam und der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Archäologie des Mittelalters und der Neuzeit (DGAMN)

Einreichungsfrist: 30. April 2026 

Der inhaltliche Fokus der gemeinsamen Tagung soll dem Titel entsprechend auf dem Haus, seinen baulichen und räumlichen Strukturen, seinen Spuren im Boden sowie seinem Umfeld liegen. Stadtmauern, Kirchen, Burgen und Friedhöfe sind dagegen kein Thema dieser Tagung.

Die fokussierte Themenvorgabe ist mit der Hoffnung verbunden, dass im Zuge der gemeinsamen Betrachtung gleicher Objekte aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven fruchtbare Diskussionen und im besten Falle neue Erkenntnisse erwachsen. Aufgrund der unterschiedlichen Fachbereiche sind auch Beiträge, die im „eigenen Kreis“ schon vorgetragen wurden, ausdrücklich zum neuerlichen Vortrag erwünscht.

Die themenbezogenen Tagungsbeiträge sollen eine Dauer von 20 Minuten nicht überschreiten. Für die Präsentation neuer Forschungen sind 15 Minuten vorgesehen. Die Tagungssprache ist Deutsch, es können aber auch englischsprachige Vorträge gehalten werden. Da die Zahl der Vorträge begrenzt ist, kann es unter Umständen zu einem Auswahlverfahren eingereichter Beiträge durch eine gemeinsame Vorbereitungsgruppe von AHF und DGAMN kommen. 

Die Beiträge der Tagung werden in einer gemeinsamen Publikation der beiden Ausrichtervereinigungen veröffentlicht.

Die technische Ausstattung für eine digitale Bildpräsentation (PowerPoint) steht den Vortragenden zur Verfügung. Es ist vorgesehen, die Vorträge während der Tagung als Hybridveranstaltung online zu streamen.

Für den Jahrgang 2027 von Rhetorik. Ein internationales Jahrbuch, publiziert bei DeGruyter Brill, planen die beiden Herausgeber ein Jahrbuch mit Beiträgen zum Thema Rhetorik und Epideiktik. Der Band richtet sich an Forscher*Innen, die sich für die Lob- und Tadelrede in der Rhetorikgeschichte und vor allem auch in ihren zeitgenössischen Ausprägungen in Praxis wie Theorie interessieren. Die Bandherausgeber möchten insbesondere auch jüngeren Wissenschaftler*Innen mit Interesse für den Themenbereich die Möglichkeit bieten, einen Artikel beizusteuern.

Interessent*innen melden sich bis zum 12. April 2026 mit einem Arbeitstitel und einem kurzen Abstract von etwa 300 Worten bei: Prof. Dietmar Till (Seminar für Allgemeine Rhetorik, Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen) – dietmar.till@uni.tuebingen.de und Dr. Frank Schuhmacher – frank-holger.schuhmacher@uni-tuebingen.de

Beiträge aus Disziplinen wie Literaturwissenschaft, Linguistik, Geschichtswissenschaft, Politikwissenschaft, Medienwissenschaft oder Rhetorik sind gleichermaßen erwünscht.

Das Rhetorik-Jahrbuch publiziert vorzugsweise auf Deutsch, aber auch Texte in englischer Sprache sind willkommen. Die fertigen Manuskripte sollen bis zum 1. November 2026 abgegeben werden. Der Band wird dann im Oktober/November 2027 erscheinen.

The Role of Epistolary Communication in Monastic Life and Organisation

The conference aims to explore monastic letters from an interdisciplinary perspective—patristics and church history, philology, and ancient history— considering different languages and specific examples. It will examine the ways in which letters served as a medium for monks’ social interactions and the functions of epistolary commerce in monastic life. A comparison will be made to investigate how late antique monks communicated and acted in letters, in which areas and matters they intervened, which functions letters fulfilled in the process, and the extent to which the form of letter writing was relevant to these activities.

Sacrality is a ubiquitous concept in academia. Although recent studies have complicated the notion of the sacred and the profane, their binary construction remains influential. One consequence of this distinction is that processes of sacralization are well-researched, but processes of desacralization are not. The conference brings together experts from ancient, medieval and early modern studies to investigate notions of desacralization in a comparative and trans-epochal framework.

Die Quellenforschung war im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert eine prägende Methode innerhalb der Altertumswissenschaften. Obwohl sie später vielfach als übermäßig positivistisch kritisiert wurde, prägt sie bis heute grundlegende Debatten über Textgenese, Rekonstruktion und Geistesgeschichte. Auf der Tagung kommen Forschende der Klassischen Philologie und benachbarter Disziplinen zusammen, um dieses wissenschaftsgeschichtliche Phänomen aus epistemologischer und methodischer Perspektive neu zu beleuchten und kritisch zu reflektieren.

Culture in Translation – History, Literature, and the Transcultural Movement of Ideas

Zurich, 1–4 October 2026

The conference's aim is to discuss from an interdisciplinary perspective how ancient traditions from Jewish, Christian, ancient Near Eastern as well as Greek and Roman contexts shaped the culture and discourses of their time, and how some literature could develop into particularly enduring and influential repositories of a history of ideas, both within antiquity and beyond, through processes of transmission, translation, and the formation of tradition. In short, we want to ask how and why precisely those ancient materials that we today consider particularly enduring and influential succeeded in achieving their lasting impact across history.

There is an open call for papers, and we hope to encourage a broad range of scholars, specifically including early career researchers, from a range of subjects (Ancient History, Biblical Studies, Classics, History of Judaism and Christianity, Ancient Near Eastern studies, including reception history etc.) to propose a paper. There is some funding available to support junior scholars’ expenses towards travel and accommodation in Zurich. This is to ensure the accessibility of the conference. Details will be communicated to participants upon the acceptance of their short paper.
