Medieval Latin Lexicography 2020
The Mittellateinisches Wörterbuch Institute (MLW) invites applications for its Medieval Latin Lexicography Summer School, which will take place in Munich from 3-7 August 2020. We welcome participation by researchers with good knowledge of Latin whose work engages especially with Medieval Latin vocabulary, at any stage of their studies or career.
In addition to philology, relevant disciplines could include linguistics, medieval studies, history of science, philosophy, theology etc.
The program involves three types of activity: First, seminar-type exercises address Medieval Latin lexicography, the sources, methods and format of the MLW. In a special module, colleagues from Medieval Latin dictionaries in other countries will present their projects. Secondly, participants collaborate in the drafting of a short lexicographic entry (lemma or lemmata to be determined). Lastly, there is daily time for participants' own research, supported by advice from researchers at the dictionary.
The MLW Institute is home to a paper-slip archive of roughly 1,5 millions of word references gained from about 4000 titles: Latin texts written from ca. 600 to 1280 in the German-speaking area. Our library contains editions of most of our texts, plus commentaries and secondary literature. In addition, the paper-slip archive and the comprehensive library of the Thesaurus linguae Latinae will also be at participants' disposal. Not far from the MLW Institute, there are other research institutes: the Bavarian State Library, the Ludwig-Maximilians-University and the Monumenta Germaniae Historica.
The workshop begins at 9:30 on 3 August. Daily activities typically run from 9:30 to roughly 5pm, with some optional evening excursions. Participants are responsible for their own journey and housing. The language of group instruction is German (occasionally English or French), but one-to-one support is available in English, French and Italian.
Applications must be received by 15 April 2020 by email to: email@example.com
Applications should include a curriculum vitae and a one- to two-page abstract indicating your fields of research and what linguistic or lexicographical questions you possibly hope to address during your stay. It is important to show familiarity with existing lexicographic resources.
Only 12 participants can be admitted, who will be notified by 30 April 2020.
