Epigraphy and New Approaches to Reading (Ancient) Inscriptions

As part of the concluding event of the project “Making Roman Inscriptions in Styria Legible Again Using Optical Measurement Techniques” (PN 4067), we invite submissions for a poster session on epigraphic research, with particular emphasis on approaches connected to the themes of our project.
We particularly welcome submissions from early-career and young scholars, including advanced students, doctoral candidates, and postdoctoral researchers. Posters may present inscriptions from any geographical or chronological context. We encourage contributions addressing topics such as the documentation, reading, reconstruction, visualisation, or interpretation of damaged, weathered, or difficult-to-read inscriptions, as well as the application of digital, imaging, or optical methods in epigraphic research.
The event will take place at the University of Graz on 20 November 2026 and will bring together scholars working at the intersection of epigraphy, ancient history, and innovative methods for the study of inscribed monuments. Applicants are invited to submit a short abstract of approximately 200–300 words.
Submission
Please send your abstract by 30 September 2026 to both gregor.diez@uni-graz.at and florian.wachter@uni-graz.at. If you would like to be considered for a contribution towards travel expenses, please also attach a short biographical note. Notification of acceptance will be sent by 10 October 2026.
