23–25 September 2026: Humility across Times and Cultures: Concepts, Practices, Artifacts

20. August 2026, Ansgar Teichgräber - Veranstaltungen

Humility across Times and Cultures: Concepts, Practices, Artifacts
Conference
Zurich, 23–25 September 2026

The conference aims significantly to broaden both the geographical and chronological scope of the inquiry into historical conceptions and practices of humility. The focus spans the period from 250 CE to 1500 CE and draws on sources from a wide geographical area, including Western Europe, Byzantium, and the Middle East. By centering these regions, we seek to map humility within a space that, for all its cultural diversity, was shaped in significant ways by the three Abrahamic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. While we do not assume that humility was exclusively or primarily a religious value, there is reason to believe that within the Abrahamic traditions, it was indeed upheld as a virtue, frequently positioned in opposition to pride, which was often viewed as the most dangerous and diabolical of vices.

Conference panels will be organized along both chronological and thematic lines, encompassing European Christian regions, Byzantium, Jewish communities, and Islamic territories. Special attention will be given to the physical and social spaces in which humility was conceived and enacted, as well as to the interplay between humility and gender.

Organization
The conference is organized by Silvia Negri (Universität Zürich, Historisches Seminar) and James Weaver (University of Oxford), within the framework of the project “Humility in theory and practice. Historical approaches across cultures”.

21-22 September 2026: History of Austrian/Austro-Hungarian archaeology in the Balkans and the eastern Mediterranean, mid-19th to mid-20th centuries

18. August 2026, Ansgar Teichgräber - Veranstaltungen

History of Austrian/Austro-Hungarian archaeology in the Balkans and the eastern Mediterranean, mid-19th to mid-20th centuries
Symposium
Vienna, 21-22 September 2026

The symposium discusses these archaeologies within and beyond the Habsburg Empire/Austria in their colonial and imperial contexts, including the aftermath of the empire’s dissolution in 1918. Like other European powers, Austria(-Hungary) used archaeology to exercise power in respective territories, gain international prestige, and fill the museums in Vienna. In the Austrian Balkans, archaeology and historic artefacts were also meant to strengthen inhabitants’ loyalty to the rulers. On the other hand, certain local archaeologies within the empire served nationalist goals. Another focus is on the relations between archaeologists from different parts of the empire and beyond.

Venue
Austrian Academy of Sciences
Theatersaal
Sonnenfelsgasse 19
1010 Vienna

Organizers
Maximilian Georg (Austrian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Culture Studies)
Felix Höflmayer (Austrian Academy of Sciences, Austrian Archaeological Institute)

12. August 2026, Ansgar Teichgräber - Veranstaltungen

FAIR 3D HERITAGE
Documentation, Publication and Preservation of the Digital 3D Heritage on the Web
Mainz/hybrid, 14–16 September 2026

FAIR 3D Heritage is a conference focused on improving how digital 3D cultural heritage can be documented, published, and preserved on the Web. It responds to the rapid growth of 3D reconstructions, scans, and models across libraries, archives, museums, and research projects by promoting interoperable workflows, robust metadata and paradata, and sustainable infrastructures that support FAIR and TRUST-aligned practices.

By bringing together researchers, heritage professionals, infrastructure providers, and software developers, FAIR 3D Heritage fosters a collaborative environment to exchange methods, tools, and best practices—from web/XR viewer ecosystems and linked-data integration to repository strategies and long-term preservation. The conference provides a platform to share results, discuss challenges, and strengthen a shared foundation for reusable, future-proof 3D heritage data.

The conference will be held in Mainz (Germany) on 14–16 September 2026 at the LUX Pavilion (Hochschule Mainz – University of Applied Sciences), the event also serves as a final presentation and critical reflection of the second funding phase of the DFG 3D-Viewer project, positioning its results within the broader landscape of digital 3D heritage infrastructures.

14–15 September 2026: Making Matters. Processes and Meaning of Crafting in Graeco-Roman Antiquity

05. August 2026, Ansgar Teichgräber - Veranstaltungen

Making Matters. Processes and Meaning of Crafting in Graeco-Roman Antiquity
International Conference
Zurich/hybrid, 14-15 September 2026

The international conference Making Matters. Processes and Meaning of Crafting in Graeco-Roman Antiquity explores the changing relationships between people, artefacts, and processes of making in the ancient Greek and Roman worlds against the backdrop of contemporary debates on creativity and technological agency in the age of generative AI. As the latter increasingly blurs the boundaries between human and non-human production, these debates also draw attention to the historical contingency of such distinctions and the importance of the process of production itself.

A Zoom broadcast is planned. To receive the access link, please kindly fill out this form and we will send you the link in the days leading up to the event: https://forms.gle/68wy5f9BWwQQ1BHY8

16.-18. September 2026: Natur – Tiere – Krieg.

Internationale Konferenz
Dortmund/hybrid, 16.-18. September 2026

Anmeldeschluss: 1. September 2026

to English version
