When engaging with ‘pre-texts’ – the source texts used in the composition of new texts – authors employed various adaptive strategies, from faithful translation to wholesale reinterpretation.

All the above textual strategies have one thing in common: they consciously rely on a pre-text or source. We refer to this phenomenon as heteronomy. Our Research Training Group focuses on heteronomous texts that still are original, autonomous products through their commentary, continuation, compilation, or adaptation. Building on our first international conference, ‘(Re)Create. Towards a Theory of Heteronomous Texts’, we seek to explore the concept of ‘autonomy’ through interdisciplinary examination of texts from various fields of research.

We invite contributions from (but not limited to) the following fields:
Theology and Biblical Studies, Latin, Middle and Neo Latin Studies, Greek and Byzantine Studies, Syriac Studies, Ancient and Medieval History and Philosophy, German Medieval Studies, and Roman Law.

Proposals may take the form of either:
• a 30-minute presentation followed by 15 minutes of discussion, with the possibility of publication in the conference proceedings, or
• a 10-minute project pitch followed by a short discussion (especially encouraged for early career researchers).

In your abstract (max. 300 words) please specify your chosen presentation format and include, on a separate page, your name, profession, affiliation, short academic CV, and email address or equivalent contact information. 9. Interdisziplinärer Doktorand*innen-Workshop zu mittelalterlichen Sakralräumen (MiSaR)

Um mittelalterliche Sakralräume durchdringen zu können, braucht es eine multiperspektivische, interdisziplinäre Herangehensweise – und es braucht Räume, um sich darüber austauschen zu können. Einen solchen Raum soll der 9. Interdisziplinäre Doktorand*innen-Workshop bieten:

Alle Teilnehmenden bekommen die Möglichkeit, mindestens eine Stunde lang das eigene Forschungsprojekt oder Aspekte daraus zu präsentieren und zur Diskussion zu stellen. Darüber hinaus fördern wir im Rahmen des Workshops offene Formate zu Themen rund um das wissenschaftliche Arbeiten, den unbefangenen Austausch über Rahmenbedingungen und Lebensumstände während der Promotion, konstruktive Feedbacks in Kleingruppen und die persönliche Vernetzung.
Der Workshop wird von Doktorand*innen für Doktorand*innen veranstaltet – und das bereits seit über zehn Jahren mit großem Erfolg: abseits institutionalisierter Strukturen und zugleich als Teil eines lebendigen Netzwerks, das sich mit jeder neuen Generation von Promovierenden um wertvolle Perspektiven erweitert.

Um die Vielfalt der Forschungsmöglichkeiten rund um Sakralräume abbilden zu können, laden wir daher Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen der Architektur- und Kunstgeschichte, Archäologie und Bauforschung, Liturgie- und Geschichtswissenschaften, der Digital Humanities (v.a. Digital (Art) History oder Archeology) und angrenzender Disziplinen ein, sich mit folgenden Unterlagen zu bewerben:
• Exposee zum Vortrag (max. 500 Worte, gerne mit Abbildungen)
• Lebenslauf (mit Angaben zu Art und Stand des Forschungsvorhabens sowie ggf. Betreuung)
Die Tagungskosten belaufen sich aktuell auf 431,35 € p.P. inkl. Unterkunft und Verpflegung. Sobald das Programm feststeht, werden wir uns um Fördermöglichkeiten bemühen, die zu einer deutlichen Senkung der Kosten beitragen. Dennoch empfehlen wir, sich darüber hinaus rechtzeitig über individuelle Fördermöglichkeiten zu informieren.

Im Zentrum steht die Frage, in welchen Kontexten Nichtwissen von den Zeitgenoss*innen überhaupt zum Thema gemacht wurde. Der raumzeitliche Fokus liegt auf einem Mittelalter mit weichen geographischen und epochalen Grenzen, das sowohl das 5. als auch das 16. Jahrhundert einschließt. Das Mittelalter eröffnet Perspektiven auf vormoderne Wissenskulturen, die sich hinsichtlich ihrer stratifikatorischen Differenzierung, ihrer Kontingenzwahrnehmung und ihrer Auffassung von den Grenzen des Wissens deutlich von modernen Gesellschaften unterscheiden.

Die Tagung ist fachöffentlich und bedarf keiner persönlichen Einladung. Wir freuen uns auf Vortragsvorschläge von Wissenschaftler*innen aus allen Teildisziplinen der Mediävistik (Anglistik, Archäologie, Byzantinistik, Germanistik, Geschichte, Islamwissenschaft, Jüdische Studien, Kunstgeschichte, Mittellatein, Musikwissenschaft, Philosophie, Rechtsgeschichte, Romanistik, Skandinavistik, Theologie usw.) in allen Karrierestufen, insbesondere von Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen. Die Vorträge können in deutscher oder englischer Sprache gehalten werden und sollten 25–30 Minuten nicht überschreiten. Für alle Vortragenden werden Übernachtungs- und Reisekosten übernommen.

Material Culture in Transformation: The Afterlives of Premodern Stone and Metal Objects
Third Workshop in the Series Cultures of Use and Reuse
Mainz, 12–14 April 2027

The organisers invite proposals from historians, art historians, archaeologists, epigraphists, conservators, heritage practitioners and scholars of religion and cultural studies at all career stages. Contributions should engage directly with the themes of reuse and transformation in medieval stone and/or metal, whether through detailed case studies, comparative analyses or conceptual interventions. Work that situates local or regional material within broader Mediterranean, transregional or global frameworks, or that reflects on the relationship between medieval and early modern practices, is particularly welcome.

Application
Please submit a single PDF file that contains an abstract of 300–400 words and a short biographical note of no more than 150 words. The abstract should outline your main argument, indicate the primary sources and materials you will discuss, specify the geographical and chronological focus of your paper, and explain how your contribution engages with the workshop’s interest in reuse, afterlives and material transformation in stone and metal. The biographical note should include your name, institutional affiliation and up to five relevant publications, projects or exhibitions (where applicable). If you would prefer to present a shorter, more exploratory contribution instead of a full-length paper, please indicate this clearly in your proposal.
Proposals should be sent by Monday, 13 April 2026 to: carolin.gluchowski@uni-hamburg.de, Julia.Noll@adwmainz.de and julia.von.ditfurth@kunstgeschichte.uni-freiburg.de. Applicants will be informed of the outcome by mid-May 2026. Draft versions of accepted papers of approximately 3,000–5,000 words will be circulated among all participants by the beginning of 2027 in order to facilitate substantive discussion during the workshop.

Documentation, Publication and Preservation of the Digital 3D Heritage on the Web

The DFG 3D-Viewer Conference brings together researchers, heritage professionals, infrastructure providers and software developers to discuss how interoperable, standards-based and applicable 3D workflows can support sustainable digital heritage. We aim to address conceptual, methodological and technical challenges and to encourage exchange between communities. The conference also serves as a final presentation and critical reflection of the second funding phase of the DFG 3D-Viewer project, situating its results within the broader landscape of digital 3D heritage infrastructures.

Paper Submission
To propose a contribution, please submit an extended abstract of up to 500 words in British English (approximately one page, excluding references), including a maximum of two images and 10 references, in PDF format via our Google Form (link on the conference website). We welcome the following contribution types:

  • Oral presentations on site (15 minutes + discussion),
  • Posters (A1 Poster in the exhibition section + 6 minutes presentation/demo).

Funding & costs
Thanks to the support of the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG), we can offer:

  • Travel cost reimbursement for selected speakers up to 250,00€ (according to DFG regulations).
  • Lunch, dinner and coffee breaks for the duration of the conference.

Focusing on ancient, medieval, and early modern materials across diverse cultural traditions, the workshop investigates how examples achieve epistemic force within different knowledge cultures. It asks how exemplary reasoning stabilizes or challenges knowledge claims, structures judgment and comparison, and shapes epistemic communities across time and cultural boundaries. How do examples foster shared modes of reasoning? How do they connect communities and stimulate further inquiry—whether through paradigmatic cases, authoritative repertoires such as the Greek paradeigma and Roman exemplum, or through hypothetical and thought examples that function as heuristics for theory formation?

The workshop combines participants’ contributions (ca. 20 minutes) — including paper presentations and impulse talks — with close readings of selected key passages from thinkers such as Aristotle, Quintilian, and Bacon. Both formats are designed to foster sustained discussion and to consolidate a shared conceptual vocabulary for analyzing exemplarity as an epistemic practice. 

Participants
The workshop warmly welcomes contributions from Classicists, Sinologists, Judaists, Medieval and Early Modern scholars, philosophers, historians of science, epistemologists, and researchers from related disciplines. We invite applications from advanced PhD candidates to senior researchers and particularly encourage contributions that engage across disciplinary and cultural boundaries.

UTN covers the costs of a round-trip to (Deutsche Bahn, 2nd class) and accommodation in Nuremberg for all participants.

We are delighted to announce that the Call for Sessions for the XVII International Numismatic Congress in Frankfurt 12-17 September 2027 will be open from 1 March to 15 June 2026. 
To mark the centenary of the founding of the International Numismatic Council in 1927, the Congress will have the overall theme „Transformations and Transitions“.

We invite proposals for sessions, which may be of three kinds: Regular Sessions, Round Tables and Workshops. All formats will last three hours with two 90-minute blocks and a coffee break in between.

Please note that you may be the main proposer of only one session (irrespective of the format). You may also only speak in one session as the main speaker of a paper in a Regular Session or as the main convenor of a Round Table (but you may be a panellist in a Round Table and be main speaker in a Regular Session). The submissions system does not allow multiple submissions.

Languages: Papers in regular sessions may be in any of the Congress languages (English, French, German, Italian and Spanish). Round Tables and Workshops are to be be held in only one of the congress-languages. All proposals in this call for sessions should be in English.

The Call for Sessions will end on 15 June 2026. Proposers will be informed of the results in August 2026.

All proposals are to be submitted via the online submission system.

Conference of the research group “Political Thought in the Hebrew Bible and New Testament and Their Cultural Contexts”

The debate concerns the relationship between the individual and the collective in the diverse social constellations from the Israelite and Judean monarchies to Christianity and Judaism in the imperial period. From a methodological point of view, the topic can be addressed from the perspective of various disciplines and under different questions: Ancient Near Eastern Studies/Ancient History, Legal History, Political Science, Sociology, Biblical Exegesis, Archaeology, and Political Anthropology.

We invite researchers from these or neighboring disciplines to submit proposals with a provisional title and a summary (200 words) before August 31, 2026, to be sent to Joachim Krause (joachim.krause@rub.de), Wolfgang Oswald (wolfgang.oswald@uni-tuebingen.de) or Stefan Krauter (stefan.krauter@uzh.ch). Papers may be given in English or German. 

The conference will be held in Zurich, April 9–10, 2027. We will cover travel and accommodation fees for accepted speakers, but please be aware that, for environmental reasons, we are not allowed to cover flight tickets. For those who want to participate from far abroad, there is the possibility to join us on Zoom.

Unter dem Titel „Konstruktionen des Falschen: Fälschung und Fake im Mittelalter“ werden im Rahmen des 21. Symposiums des Mediävistikverbands vom 22. bis zum 25. Februar 2027 an der Universität Münster die Phänomene Falschheit, Fälschung und fake in interdisziplinärem Zugriff erkundet. Ausrichter der Veranstaltung ist das Centrum für Mittelalter- und Frühneuzeitforschung der Universität Münster.

Vorschläge für Sektionen und Einzelvorträge werden bis zum 31. Mai 2026 per Mail erbeten an falsemed27@uni-muenster.de.
 
Sektionen steht ein Slot von 90 Minuten zur Verfügung, sie bestehen in der Regel aus drei Vorträgen, die interdisziplinär anschlussfähig sein sollen. Die Vortragsdauer beträgt max. 20 Minuten. Die Vortragenden einer Sektion sollen mindestens zwei unterschiedliche Fächer vertreten.
 
Jeder Vorschlag (Einzelvortrag und Sektionsvortrag) soll mit einem kurzen Abstract von max. 2000 Zeichen inkl. Leerzeichen versehen sein. Bei Sektionseinreichungen soll zusätzlich ein kurzes Gesamtkonzept zu übergreifenden Fragestellungen und Zielen (max. 2000 Zeichen inkl. Leerzeichen) gegeben werden.
 
Es wird darum gebeten, bei der Einreichung die Nummer des Themenblocks (1–4, siehe Tagungskonzept) sowie die beabsichtigte Vortragssprache anzugeben.

Gemeinsame Jahrestagung 2026 des Arbeitskreis für Hausforschung (AHF) gemeinsam und der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Archäologie des Mittelalters und der Neuzeit (DGAMN)

Einreichungsfrist: 30. April 2026 

Der inhaltliche Fokus der gemeinsamen Tagung soll dem Titel entsprechend auf dem Haus, seinen baulichen und räumlichen Strukturen, seinen Spuren im Boden sowie seinem Umfeld liegen. Stadtmauern, Kirchen, Burgen und Friedhöfe sind dagegen kein Thema dieser Tagung.

Die fokussierte Themenvorgabe ist mit der Hoffnung verbunden, dass im Zuge der gemeinsamen Betrachtung gleicher Objekte aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven fruchtbare Diskussionen und im besten Falle neue Erkenntnisse erwachsen. Aufgrund der unterschiedlichen Fachbereiche sind auch Beiträge, die im „eigenen Kreis“ schon vorgetragen wurden, ausdrücklich zum neuerlichen Vortrag erwünscht.

Die themenbezogenen Tagungsbeiträge sollen eine Dauer von 20 Minuten nicht überschreiten. Für die Präsentation neuer Forschungen sind 15 Minuten vorgesehen. Die Tagungssprache ist Deutsch, es können aber auch englischsprachige Vorträge gehalten werden. Da die Zahl der Vorträge begrenzt ist, kann es unter Umständen zu einem Auswahlverfahren eingereichter Beiträge durch eine gemeinsame Vorbereitungsgruppe von AHF und DGAMN kommen. 

Die Beiträge der Tagung werden in einer gemeinsamen Publikation der beiden Ausrichtervereinigungen veröffentlicht.

Die technische Ausstattung für eine digitale Bildpräsentation (PowerPoint) steht den Vortragenden zur Verfügung. Es ist vorgesehen, die Vorträge während der Tagung als Hybridveranstaltung online zu streamen.
