9-10 April 2026: Comedy and Commerce: Ancient Economies in the Light of Comic Texts from Classical Greece to Imperial Rome

11. March 2026, Ansgar Teichgräber - Veranstaltungen

Comedy and Commerce: Ancient Economies in the Light of Comic Texts from Classical Greece to Imperial Rome
International Conference
Munich, 9–10 April 2026

Bringing together scholars from ancient history, classical philology, archaeology, and papyrology, the conference will explore how Greek and Roman comic texts—comedy and satire alike—shed light on economic practices, legal conditions, social hierarchies, and moral debates surrounding wealth, trade, and social mobility.

The conference brings together interdisciplinary research approaches within a longue durée perspective: the period under investigation ranges from Greek Classical antiquity (5th century BCE) to the Roman Imperial period (2nd century CE). Topics addressed include, among others, trade, monetization, the political dimension of abundance and scarcity, value and the commodity character of (immaterial) goods, the role of law, exchange and purchasability as metaphors, and the moral evaluation of wealth and social mobility. The search for “hard” economic facts is thus combined with the reconstruction of the socio-cultural embedding of economic activity in value discourses and literary representations.

Call for Papers: In, Under and Beside the House. Archaeology and Building Archaeology in Dialogue on the shared object „House“

11. March 2026, Ansgar Teichgräber - Call for papers

In, Under and Beside the House
Archaeology and Building Archaeology in Dialogue on the shared object „House“
Joint Annual Conference 2026 of the Arbeitskreis Hausforschung (AHF) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Archäologie des Mittelalters und der Neuzeit (DGAMN)
Brandenburg a. d. Havel/hybrid, 1-4 October 2026

Submission Deadline: 30 April 2026

The thematic focus of the conference, as indicated by its title, will be on the house itself, its structural and spatial configurations, its traces in the ground, and its immediate surroundings. Town walls, churches, castles and cemeteries are explicitly excluded from this meeting.

This focused thematic framework is intended to foster fruitful discussions and, ideally, new insights through the joint consideration of identical objects from different perspectives. Contributions that have already been presented within one’s own disciplinary circle are explicitely welcomed for renewed presentation.

Thematic papers should not exceed 20 minutes; short presentations of new research are limited to 15 minutes.

The conference language is German, but papers in English are welcome. As the number of presentations is limited, a selection process may be necessary, conducted by a joint preparatory committee of AHF and DGAMN. The proceedings will be published in a joint volume by the two organising bodies.

Technical facilities for digital image presentations (PowerPoint) will be available. The conference is planned as a hybrid event with online streaming of presentations.

Please submit proposals including the paper title, an abstract of no more than 10 lines, and a short CV with full postal address by 30 April 2026 to:

25–26 March 2026: Monastic Letter Writing in Late Antiquity. The Role of Epistolary Communication in Monastic Life and Organisation

04. March 2026, Ansgar Teichgräber - Veranstaltungen

Monastic Letter Writing in Late Antiquity
The Role of Epistolary Communication in Monastic Life and Organisation
International Conference
Würzburg, 25–26 March 2026

The conference aims to explore monastic letters from an interdisciplinary perspective—patristics and church history, philology, and ancient history— considering different languages and specific examples. It will examine the ways in which letters served as a medium for monks’ social interactions and the functions of epistolary commerce in monastic life. A comparison will be made to investigate how late antique monks communicated and acted in letters, in which areas and matters they intervened, which functions letters fulfilled in the process, and the extent to which the form of letter writing was relevant to these activities.

26–27 March 2026: Desacralization in Premodern Europe and Asia. Senses, Spaces and Objects

04. March 2026, Ansgar Teichgräber - Veranstaltungen

Desacralization in Premodern Europe and Asia. Senses, Spaces and Objects
Conference
Potsdam, 26-27 March 2026

Sacrality is a ubiquitous concept in academia. Although recent studies have complicated the notion of the sacred and the profane, their binary construction remains influential. One consequence of this distinction is that processes of sacralization are well-researched, but processes of desacralization are not. The conference brings together experts from ancient, medieval and early modern studies to investigate notions of desacralization in a comparative and trans-epochal framework.

27. February 2026, Ansgar Teichgräber - Veranstaltungen

Quellenforschung: Epistemologische Voraussetzungen, historische Beispiele und Rezeption eines wissenschaftshistorischen Phänomens zwischen Philosophie und Geschichte
Trier/hybrid, 19.-21.

Neues Propylaeum-eBOOK: "Jonathan Ethier: Cooking Food - Creating Culture?"

26. February 2026, Katrin Bemmann - Latest

Die Dissertation von Jonathan Ethier “Cooking Food - Creating Culture? Food Culture as a Concept for Archaeology.
