Connectivity – Exchange – Conflict: New Archaeological and Historical Perspectives on the Central and Western Mediterranean of the 2nd and 1st Centuries BCE
Internationale Tagung
Mainz, 12.-14. November 2025

How did war, trade and mobility shape the Mediterranean world of the late Roman Republic? The international conference “Connectivity – Exchange – Conflict: New Archaeological and Historical Perspectives on the Central and Western Mediterranean of the 2nd and 1st Centuries BCE”, held at the LEIZA from 12 to 14 November 2025, explores the forces driving conflict and cultural exchange in the 2nd and 1st centuries BCE.

In this period, Rome expanded its sphere of influence as never before – with far-reaching consequences for politics, economy and culture. The conference brings together specialists to develop new perspectives on the dense networks and transformations of the time. The focus lies on Italy and Sicily, complemented by developments in Gaul, North Africa, the Iberian Peninsula and along the Adriatic coast. Archaeological finds, epigraphic evidence and literary sources provide the basis for discussing the dynamics of exchange and conflict during one of the most transformative phases in the history of the Mediterranean.
