Practicing Genre. Dynamics of Generic Form(ation)s in Greco-Roman Literature
International conference
Bonn, 8–10 April 2026

The international conference Practicing Genre. Dynamics of Generic Form(ation)s in Greco-Roman Literature (8–10 April 2026, University of Bonn, IMPULSE – House for Intellectual Innovation and Creativity) addresses a central methodological problem of classical scholarship: how to conceptualize literary genres in Greco-Roman antiquity. Rather than treating genres as stable, normatively defined categories—as suggested by the later reception of canonical texts such as Aristotle’s Poetics or Horace’s Ars Poetica—the conference adopts a praxeological perspective. From this viewpoint, genres emerge from repeated acts of production, performance, circulation, and interpretation within specific social and institutional contexts.
