Call for papers
Ancient childhood(s) between biological knowledge and social constructs
IPHIS-Konferenz
Trier, 20-22 May 2027
Submission Deadline: 10 July 2026
The conference, held within the framework of "IPHIS – Gender Studies in Antiquity," aims to re-examine the question of how childhood(s) were perceived and mediated in antiquity in light of contemporary issues. It will focus particularly on the significance of status inequalities, constructions of biological and social gender, and the multifaceted interactions between these elements. In three broad thematic sections, various sources (literary and documentary texts, visual arts, possibly bioarchaeological evidence) are to be brought into an interdisciplinary dialogue from the perspectives of Classical Philology, Ancient History, Archaeology, and other cultural studies of the Ancient Mediterranean.
In addition to the invited experts, we would also like to give up to four early-career researchers (doctoral candidates at an advanced stage of their studies, or researchers in the early postdoctoral phase — up to approximately two years after completing their doctorate) the opportunity to present their research on childhood in antiquity in a collaborative atmosphere. The conference will result in a collective volume to be published by Wissenschaftlicher Verlag Trier in the IPHIS-series (https://www.wvttrier.de/c/fachgebiete/altertumswissenschaft/iphis-gender-studies-in-den-altertumswissenschaften). Abstracts of up to 400 words can be submitted until 10 July 2026 to debrasi@uni-trier.de and ambuehl@uni-mainz.de. Speakers are welcome to present in the language of their choice; shared languages of the conference will be German and English. The organizers will be able to cover (part of) the travel and accommodation costs.
Organisation
