Religion, Meteorology and Climate Anxiety in Late Antiquity
International conference
Innsbruck, 7-8 April 2027

Submission Deadline: 17 August 2026

The international conference RELIGION, METEOROLOGY AND CLIMATE ANXIETY IN LATE ANTIQUITY seeks to explore the complex relationships between atmospheric phenomena, environmental uncertainty, religious practices and strategies of resilience in the Late Antique world. Within the framework of the Networks of Sanctity, Lived Religion and Climate Risk in the Post-Roman West (NEXUS) project, funded by the University of Innsbruck (UIBK) and based at the Institut für Alte Geschichte und Altorientalistik, the conference will examine how Christian communities in the late antique world interpreted, experienced and responded to climatic and environmental challenges, with particular attention to the ways in which religious strategies shaped these responses.

More broadly, the conference aims to reflect on how extreme weather events and disaster narratives contributed to processes of religious innovation, the construction of authority and cultural transformation in Late Antique and post-Roman societies. The conference particularly welcomes contributions engaging with ecocritical approaches, lived religion, hagiographical studies and interdisciplinary perspectives combining textual, archaeological and environmental analysis.

The workshop will take place at the Institut für Alte Geschichte und Altorientalistik, University of Innsbruck, on 7-8 april 2027. Proposals including a title, an abstract and a short CV (each with a maximum length of 300 words) should be sent to Rocio.Suarez-Vallejo@uibk.ac.at before 17 August 2026.
Subject to the availability of funding, we aim to contribute towards travel expenses.
The contributions are expected to be published in an edited monograph.
