Monument(al) clay
International interdisciplinary workshop
Eichstätt (Germany), 17-18 October 2026
Submission Deadline: 8 August 2026
The international interdisciplinary workshop "Monument(al) Clay" organized by Louis Nebelsick (UKSW of Warsaw) and Nadin Burkhardt (Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt) will take place at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt on the 17–18th of October 2026, The first day (17 October) will be devoted to lectures and poster presentations. On 18 October, a guided excursion to the Stätteberg archaeological site with the excavation team is planned.
Our objective is to bring together specialists from archaeology, architectural history, building archaeology, and materials science to foster an open comparative exchange based on their individual case studies and experiences. The emphasis is not only on individual archaeological features but also explicitly on methodological questions: How can earthen construction techniques be reliably identified in the archaeological record? Which terminological and analytical challenges arise? What patterns of distribution or connections can be reconstructed through the use of clay (i.e., knowledge transfer)? Under what conditions are comparisons between different regions and chronological periods meaningful?
A poster session will be held on 17 October 2026, during which poster presenters will have the opportunity to discuss their work. Posters may also be submitted without attending the workshop in person, and return shipment of posters is possible upon request. The poster session offers a forum for presenting and discussing original hypotheses, as well as ongoing or completed research projects related to the workshop theme. Early-career researchers are especially encouraged to participate.
Applications for poster presentations should be submitted by 8 August 2026 via email to Nadin.Burkhardt@ku.de and l.nebelsick@uksw.edu.pl.
Please submit a description of the proposed poster of 300–500 words as a Word or PDF document. Illustrations may be included in the abstract. Submissions may be written in ei-ther German or English.
Following acceptance, contributors will be asked to submit their posters in printed A2 or A1 format by post.
Posters should preferably be prepared in English. Posters in German, French, Italian, or Polish are also welcome. If a language other than English is used, the poster should include an English-language abstract.
The workshop organizers will review all poster applications and notify applicants of the outcome by 30 August 2026.
Travel expenses must be covered by the poster presenters themselves.
