Call for Papers: Networks in Roman Iron Age Barbaricum

Avatar of Ansgar Teichgräber Ansgar Teichgräber - 27. April 2026 - Call for papers

Networks in Roman Iron Age Barbaricum
Session of the working group Roman Iron Age in Barbaricum at the antiquity associations meeting in Bonn
Bonn/hybrid, 23-24 September 2026

Submission Deadline: 30 April 2026

During the Roman Empire in Germania magna developments were heterogeneous and diverse. However, they were also characterised by contacts and interactions: connecting elements, whether personal, material or ideological, repeatedly emerged (and disappeared). This led to the formation of networks. These could be stable or unstable, micro-regional or Europe-wide, short-lived or lasting for centuries. Analysing them is an important step towards better understanding the complex cultural history of large parts of Europe in the first centuries AD.

Within this framework, a wide variety of approaches and considerations are welcome, e.g. geographical networks, spatial concepts, routes, transport/traffic, interpersonal networks, economic exchange, forms and spaces of communication, social structures and networks, resilience and continuity, (acteur-oriented) network analyses, micro-networks on site level, and much more. In addition, we offer an open block for recent studies and aspects of heritage management. This call for papers is open, it is not necessary to be a member of the working group. Whether it is a thesis, a new discovery, a dissertation or a large research project – all submissions are welcome! It is planned that it will be possible to participate digitally.
