469 neue E-Books stehen den registrierten Nutzern von Propylaeum seit August 2025 zur Verfügung. Das ProQuest Ebook Central Paket vergrößert sich damit auf über 2000 Titel. Die E-Books renommierter Verlage (u.a. Brill, Cambridge University Press, Dr. Josef Kovac, Franz Steiner, Harrassowitz, Routledge, De Gruyter) sind größtenteils 2024 und 2025 erschienen und decken das gesamte Fächerspektrum des Fachinformationsdienstes Altertumswissenschaften ab.

The 53nd International Conference on Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology (CAA) will be held in Vienna, Austria, from 31 March to 4 April 2026.
You are invited to submit a proposal to organise a session on any aspect of computer applications or quantitative methods in archaeology.
Session organisers may choose from one of the following formats:

  • Standard – with a series of 20-minute papers addressing a theme presented in advance by the organisers;
  • Round Table – with a pre-conference position paper published by the organisers of the session as integral part of the CFS, followed by an invitation for researchers to submit a response in advance or to participate in open-forum discussion at the session;
  • Other – with the format decided by the organisers, exploring innovative and creative ways for participants to engage with the session.

Session proposals (up to 1000 words plus references) should be broad enough to reach all interested researchers, regardless of affiliation or background.

Deadlines
The CAA2026 call for sessions will be open 7 July until 17 August 2025 (extended to 31 August). Acceptance notifications will be sent to session chairs in early-September, and the call for papers will open mid-September.
All session chairs will need to register for the conference before the end of the early-bird period.

The Archaeological Genre Image. Contemporary Field Photography and Its Place in Western Visual Culture

Session im Rahmen der 33. Theoretical Roman Archaeology Conference (22–24.10.2025, virtuell)

Einsendeschluss: 31.8.2025

Nahezu jedes archäologische Feldforschungsprojekt bedient sich in Öffentlichkeitsarbeit wie auch in dezidierten Fachpublikationen eines ikonographisch hochgradig standardisierten Repertoires von Arbeits- und Gruppenbildern. Der offenkundig intuitive Gebrauch dieser Bildgattung beruht, so die Hypothese, auf ihrer tiefgreifenden Verwurzelung in der westlichen Bildgeschichte. Gesucht werden kurze Vorträge in englischer oder deutscher Sprache, die das vermeintlich triviale und voraussetzungslose Genre der archäologischen Kampagnenfotografie kritisch auf ihr historisch gewachsenes Substrat an Formen, Funktionen und Werten hin beleuchten.

FID-Lizenzen: Neue Datenbanken: Flavius Josephus Online und The International Aristotle Bibliography

Der FID Altertumswissenschaften - Propylaeum stellt zwei neue Datenbanken bereit:

Flavius Josephus Online bietet eine umfassende historisch-kritische Online-Ausgabe der Werke von Flavius Josephus (37/38 n. Chr. - ca. 100 n. Chr.). Derzeit stehen 65% der Werke in der Datenbank zu Verfügung, die übrigen Schriften werden sukzessive bis 2028 bearbeitet und online gestellt.

The International Aristotle Bibliography bildet die einschlägige internationale Spezialbibliographie zur Aristoteles-Forschung mit über 50.000 einschlägigen Literaturnachweisen.

Beide Bibliographien sind als Nationallizenzen deutschlandweit über Bibliotheken aufrufbar. Registrierte Nutzende der FID-Lizenzen können auch direkt auf die Datenbanken zugreifen.

Am Fachbereich Klassische Archäologie findet vom 05.-06. Februar 2026 der Workshop "Bildtechnik. Archäologische Visualisierungskulturen im Wandel" statt, der von Sophie Preiswerk und Oliver Bruderer in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Digital Visualisation Lab unter Leitung von Corinna Reinhardt organisiert wird.

Der an Nachwuchswissenschaftler:innen gerichtete Workshop fokussiert auf die facettenreichen Visualisierungstraditionen der Klassischen Archäologie in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart, wobei wir untersuchen wollen, wie unterschiedliche Darstellungsformen archäologischer Gegenstände – von manuellen Techniken bis hin zu digitalen Methoden – nicht nur das visuelle Repositorium der Klassischen Archäologie erweitern, sondern auch zur kontinuierlichen Revision und Neuausrichtung disziplinärer Erkenntnisprozesse beitragen. Eine detaillierte Beschreibung samt Beschreibung des Formates und möglicher thematischer Zugänge finden Sie im Call for Papers (s.u.).

Doktorierende und PostDocs sind herzlich eingeladen, ein Abstract (max. 300 Wörter) für einen Beitrag von 25-30 Minuten zusammen mit einem kurzen CV an Sophie Preiswerk (sophie.preiswerk@archaeologie.uzh.ch) zu senden. Einsendeschluss ist der 20.September 2025.

Alle bisher in Tübingen herausgegebenen Bände der Schriftenreihe Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum sind online als Propylaeum-eBOOKS im Open Access verfügbar.
Die seit 1981 in gedruckter Form vorgelegten Bände sind rückwirkend digitalisiert und im Open Access bereitgestellt worden. Ab Band 7 erscheint die Reihe in hybridem Format als Online-Publikation im Open Access und parallel im Print-On-Demand-Verfahren.

Intersectionality in Ancient and Pre-Modern Contexts. Considering Aspects of Privilege and Marginalisation

Questions of identity and the marginalisation of specific groups have become central to both academic and public discourse. Awareness of these concerns is currently increasing in ancient and pre-modern disciplines. Intersectionality, a concept coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw (1989) within Black Feminism and Critical Race Theory, offers a valuable framework for understanding how overlapping of aspects of identity – such as race, ethnicity, gender, class, sexuality, and bodily dispositions (e.g., disability, age) – shape individual experiences of privilege and marginalisation. These dynamics unfold on the interpersonal (everyday interactions), structural (government, law, education), and socio-spatial (urban form, spatial governance, land control) levels. 

While intersectional approaches are well established in the social sciences, their application to ancient and pre-modern contexts remains mostly unexplored. The nature of pre-modern source material – often fragmentary and strongly reflecting elite perspectives – poses specific challenges. This conference aims to bring together scholars working in ancient and pre-modern fields who already engage with intersectionality or seek to explore its potential. Contributions from MA students and PhDs are explicitly encouraged. 

We encourage submissions from scholars across disciplines, including but not limited to ancient, byzantine and medieval history, archaeological disciplines (Pre- and Protohistorical Archaeology, Mediterranean Archaeology, Archaeology of the Roman Provinces, etc.), ancient Eastern studies, classical philologies, Egyptology.

Abstracts of no more than 250 words, along with your title and a short bio (max. 150 words), should be submitted by 1 September 2025 to the organisers. Presentations should preferably be given in English (exceptions are possible, e. g., German). Presentations cannot be held via Zoom. However, a Zoom link can be provided to allow participants to listen to the presentations on demand. We anticipate being able to offer a limited number of travel and accommodation bursaries to support MA and PhD students. If you would like to be considered for a bursary, please indicate this in your submission email.

Research for a Trans-Mediterranean Perspective

As part of the doctoral programme of the core research area “Trans-Mediterranean Entanglements: Mobilities and Relations in the Mediterranean and Beyond” at the Faculty of Humanities, we warmly invite you to an interdisciplinary workshop on “Coasts, Cultures, Constructs: Impulses from Emerging Research for a Trans-Mediterranean Perspective”. The workshop, which will take place on April 17 and 18, 2026, at the University of Graz, is aimed at early-career researchers.

The aim of the workshop is to bring together PhD students and postdoctoral researchers as well as Master’s students from various fields within the humanities, and to create an open forum for exchange, discussion and networking. Besides the presentation of individual projects, we want to highlight methodological impulses and conceptual as well as thematic intersections, to foster synergies, and to open up interdisciplinary perspectives on the Mediterranean and its multifaceted representations. The concept of ‘trans-Mediterranean entanglements’ serves as a framework to focus particularly on inter- and transcultural exchange, on open and dynamic constructions of identity, and on the resulting imaginations and artefacts. To further develop the synergies generated, a round table will be held to identify connections between the contributions, which will be visualised in an AI-supported digital mind map intended for online publication.

Presentations of (dissertation) projects should be approximately 20 minutes long, followed by a ten-minute moderated discussion. Master’s students are invited to present their work in the form of a poster. PhD and postdoc researchers may choose to contribute either a presentation or a poster. A dedicated timeslot for poster presentations will be scheduled between the talks. Interested participants are kindly asked to submit an abstract of 250–300 words (indicating whether a presentation or a poster is planned), along with a brief biographical statement (working title of the dissertation or Master’s thesis, academic discipline, home institution) by October 5, 2025, to: transmediterranean@uni-graz.at.

Accepted contributions will be announced by early December. A certificate of participation can be issued upon request, and we will make every effort to partially cover travel and accommodation costs if needed.
