Mobility Networks of People, Books, and Letters in Late Antiquity
2nd Workshop of MigRel.Net
Bern, 23.-24. April 2026

Letter exchange and book circulation in Late Antiquity operated through an intricate system of mobility networks. The imperial cursus publicus, ecclesiastic messengers, official ambassadors, and private envoys formed only part of a more complex web of hierarchical, professional, and friendly connections that facilitated epistolary and literary circulation. The practical aspects and nuances of these networks were significant not only for publishing activities but also for political, religious, and social life. This workshop will explore the mechanics of epistolary exchange and book circulation in relation to human mobility networks. Our methodological framework combines historical, philological, literary, and sociological theories. The workshop aims to unite scholars studying the phenomenon of mobility from various disciplinary and methodological perspectives.
