Responding to Empire
Fourth annual conference of the Research Group Empires (University of Freiburg)
Freiburg, 11 - 13 November 2026
Responding to empires can take different shapes and forms which are often contradictory — from defending and normalising, through negating and ignoring, to opposing and resisting imperial structures. This conference seeks to look at different aspects of responding to empire, beginning with a shift beyond a binary understanding of opposers/defenders. Some speakers, for example, will discuss ambivalent figures and their narrative performances; others will show how communities navigated imperial oppression through forms of active integration. Scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds will consider the wide spectrum of forms that responses to empire can take, ranging from concrete practices to the construction of narratives: this includes fighting for material interests as well as creating counternarratives. Another focal point will be on women, showing different degrees of agency and varying forms of engagement with empire. By bringing together examples from different levels of society, including individuals, communities, and institutions, this conference aims to illuminate the ambiguity and complexity of these actions and positions across different historical periods and geographical contexts.
